The challenge with today’s mobility

Efficient urban transportation is key to the socio-economic development of any society. It has a critical impact on residents’ quality of life and, indeed, the everyday functioning of our cities. Whereas most countries in the developed world have realized the concerns with current mobility practices evident in traffic congestion, cost of transportation, insecurity, vehicle emissions and public health, noise pollution, road crashes, and other concerns, and are transforming mobility, changing mindsets, and developing a new culture of sustainable mobility, Africa and the rest of the developing world lag behind.

The Knowledge Gap

The nature of urban transport developments gives clear evidence that the knowledge of sustainable urban mobility is currently limited. For instance, transport development is essentially focused on building wide roads that promote motorization. Most cities in Africa have hardly urban mobility policies. Where they do exist, they’re only a component of other policies and are hardly given attention. Most Metropolitan Assemblies don’t even have ministries of transportation or other departments responsible for urban mobility. Those that do tend to focus more on road construction and maintenance staff.

Course Content and Delivery

The course content is drawn from a wide range of global indicators, local challenges, and the experiences of actors in the industry. This is outlined into 14 modules, each containing 2 or more presentations:

  • Module 1: Introduction to Sustainable Urban Mobility
  • Module 2: Problems of Urban Mobility in Africa
  • Module 3: Transport & Climate Change
  • Module 4: Urban Public Transport System
  • Module 5: Non-Motorized Transportation
  • Module 6: Inclusive Infrastructure and other Systems
  • Module 7: ITS, Digitisation, and Smart Cities
  • Module 8: Vehicle Technology & Electrification
  • Module 9: Financing, Business & Investment models
  • Module 10: Traffic Safety and Security
  • Module 11: Policies, Regulations & Enforcement
  • Module 12: Research & Data Management

The weeklong intensive course features in-depth analysis of global transport and mobility indicators, exclusive case studies of dynamic trends in cities and business models, dialogue sessions, excursions, practical hands-on experiments, and much more. Importantly, each edition comes out with specific policy recommendations on major subject matters developed by participants, which are made available to authorities to adopt for free.

Course Facilitation

Meet the best experts on sustainable urban mobility and related topics, drawn from local and international academic institutions, government authorities, practicing experts, and development partners such as the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI), UN Habitat Institute for Transport and Development Policy (ITDP), Easter Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Transport (EASST) UK, Regional Transport Research & Education Center Kumasi (TRECK), KNUST, Ghana, the World Bank, and WHO, amongst others.

The subject of urban mobility is rarely taught, and there is susbstantial contemporary knowledge and content that has not filtered into course curriculum in Universities across Africa. Professional short courses such as this offer a bridge for introducing such knowledge to professionals in the industry to bridge the knowledge gap. It was on this basis that the Africa Sustainable Urban Mobility Course was started in 2019 with in-person and online editions, with over 300 participants from at least 40 countries trained in the 4 previous editions. The last in-person edition had 43 participants, 17 of them from other African countries.
