Samuel Akintomide AJAYI

Programme of study: PhD. Highway and Transportation Engineering | Year 2

Biography

I graduated from the Federal university of Technology, Akure Nigeria with both B.Eng and M.Eng in highway/Transportation Engineering. My interest in Highway Engineering grew when I designed, fabricated an infrared traffic counters in my undergraduate project. The counter is to count volumes, speed and delay of vehicles on the roads in order to assess the level of traffic congestion on Nigerian roads. It’s to solve the problem of hiring expensive automatic counters which also post some disturbance to the road and road users. I began to look into various research into highway and transportation in Nigeria and considering why Nigeria transportation system have not match with the developed world. I was employed into Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) in 2015 which I conducted various research into road materials and technologies.

I have published journals and conference papers on roads and transport engineering. One of the conference paper was “measures that enhances favourable levels of service and their modes of sustainability on major roads in Nigeria” where I studied on selected major arterial and dual carriageway in Akure Nigeria where I collected traffic parameters such as present volume and traffic composition and evaluated present level of service on the studied routes and projected 10 years into the future to determine the future level of service. Germane parameters which engender various level of service and their modes of sustainability.

I attended several international conferences where I presented papers on transportation engineering. As a registered civil engineer, I saw the need to upgrade or change our conventional road mix design in Nigeria. I joined and organized with collaboration of NBRRI and Nigerian Institution of Highway and Transportation Engineers (NIHTE) for a workshop on the Super pave mix design of roads. The advantage of superpave mix design over the conventional Marshall mix design is that its susceptibility to temperatures with addition of additives(sasobits).

Career Aspirations

My career goal is to research and develop materials or technologies (Transport Engineer) that will develop system in road transport and solve problems on road transport (traffic congestion, air pollution, crash/accident etc) in Africa to meet with the developed nations and in line with the SDGs goals.
