The KNUST Regional Transport Research and Education Centre Kumasi (TRECK), in collaboration with the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and with support from the World Bank, successfully organized a series of six-day Environmental and Social Risk Management (ESRM) training sessions. Held between March and May 2024, the training aimed to equip professionals with essential skills for identifying, assessing, and mitigating environmental and social risks in development projects.
The course comprised ten comprehensive units, introducing participants to foundational ESRM principles and addressing critical topics such as regulations and standards, impact assessment, stakeholder engagement, land acquisition, gender-based violence issues, grievance redress, etc.
Each unit provided participants with practical tools and knowledge to navigate complex development projects responsibly. Facilitators led interactive sessions, case studies, and field trips, ensuring participants could directly apply classroom concepts in real-world contexts.
A total of 77 professionals from Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone participated across the three sessions. Of these, 63.64% were male and 36.36% were female, reflecting commendable gender representation. Below is the breakdown;
- March 2024: 36 participants (6 Ghanaians, 13 Liberians, and 17 Sierra Leoneans)
- April 2024: 26 participants (25 Ghanaians and 1 Sierra Leonean)
- May 2024: 15 participants (all Ghanaians)
Participants generally reported that the training objectives were well met and the content was highly relevant to their professional needs. They appreciated the expertise of resource persons, the respect shown to participants, and the interactive delivery methods. Feedback highlighted several key themes:
