The Regional Transport Research & Education Centre Kumasi (TRECK) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has achieved a significant milestone with the international accreditation of its flagship programmes: MPhil/MSc Transport Systems, MSc Transport Leadership, and PhD Transport Systems. This accreditation was awarded by the Agency for Quality Assurance through Accreditation of Study Programmes (AQAS), reaffirming TRECK’s commitment to global standards in transport education and research.
From May 12 to 16, 2024, KNUST hosted an AQAS expert panel to evaluate TRECK’s programmes. The panel comprised distinguished professionals, including Prof. Dr. Alex Apeagyei, Prof. Dr. Washington Ochieng, Ms Charléne Kouassi, Ms Maike Grünberg, and Patrick Heinzer (AQAS consultant). Their mission was to assess the alignment of TRECK’s academic offerings with international quality assurance standards.
The visit commenced with a formal meeting between the AQAS panel and senior management members of KNUST. Discussions focused on the University’s strategic direction and quality assurance processes. Key participants included:
- Prof. Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, Provost of the College of Engineering
- Mrs. Ida Saeed, College Registrar
- Prof. Eric Kwabena Forkuo, Dean, School of Graduate Studies
- Prof. Jerry John Kponyo, Dean, Quality Assurance and Planning Office
- Prof. Helen Essandoh, Director of TRECK
- Other senior management members of the College of Engineering
During the subsequent days, the panel engaged in in-depth interactions with various stakeholders. Discussions covered the intended learning outcomes of the programmes, teaching practices, student evaluation methods, industry collaborations, and graduate employment. The panel met with the ACE-TRECK Management team, faculty, students, alumni, and key stakeholders from the transport industry.
A highlight of the visit was the presentation of certificates to KEEP, one of the ACE Centres, for successfully completing the international accreditation process for their programmes. This event underscored the collaborative spirit and shared commitment to academic excellence across KNUST’s Centres of Excellence.
In their preliminary feedback, the AQAS panel commended KNUST’s efforts to ensure high-quality education and research at TRECK. Following a thorough review process, AQAS has officially granted international accreditation to TRECK’s programmes. This achievement signifies that TRECK’s academic offerings meet the highest global standards, enhancing its reputation as a leader in transport education and research.
The international accreditation of TRECK’s programmes represents a significant step forward in advancing transport education in Ghana and beyond. It reinforces KNUST’s position as a hub for innovative research and training in the transport and logistics sector.
