The Regional Transport Research and Education Centre Kumasi (TRECK) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has successfully concluded its two-month Professional Short Course on Road Safety for eleven professionals from Liberia.
The programme, which began on 9th January 2026, was designed to strengthen technical capacity in road safety management and equip participants with practical tools for addressing road traffic crash challenges within the Liberian context. Over the eight-week period, participants engaged in intensive lectures, group discussions, practical exercises, and field visits covering key areas such as crash data analysis, identification of blackspots, the Safe System Approach, road safety audits, road safety impact assessments, and strategy development.
The course brought together experts from TRECK and partner institutions, creating an environment that encouraged peer learning, knowledge exchange, and regional collaboration. Participants actively shared insights from Liberia while drawing lessons from Ghana’s road safety practices and broader international standards.
The closing ceremony at TRECK in Kumasi was marked by reflection, appreciation gratitude, purpose, and renewed commitment. The session began with an opening prayer, giving thanks for a safe journey from Liberia and for eight intensive weeks of learning. Reflections during the ceremony emphasized that road traffic crashes are not matters of fate, but a public health challenge that can be addressed through data-driven action and coordinated intervention.
A message was delivered by the Assistant Minister of Transport of Liberia on behalf of the Minister of Transport. The message encouraged participants to return home prepared to apply the knowledge acquired, strengthen institutional coordination, and champion practical reforms aimed at improving road safety outcomes in Liberia. The importance of leadership, accountability, and sustained commitment in translating training into measurable impact was strongly emphasized.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, a representative expressed sincere appreciation to the facilitators and organizers and affirmed their readiness to translate the knowledge gained into meaningful impact back home.
In her remarks, the Director of TRECK commended the strong partnership that made the programme possible and encouraged participants to remain connected to the Centre. She expressed optimism about deepening collaboration between TRECK and relevant institutions in Liberia, envisioning future joint initiatives in research, training, and policy support to advance road safety across the region.
As the programme comes to an end, participants return to Liberia better equipped to support policy development, institutional strengthening, and evidence-based road safety interventions. The training has further strengthened collaboration between Ghana and Liberia and reflects TRECK’s continued commitment to capacity building and South–South cooperation in transport and logistics.
TRECK congratulates the participants on their successful completion of the course and looks forward to the long-term impact of the training on road safety practice in Liberia and the West African sub-region.
